Navagraha Puja is a comprehensive Vedic ritual that honors all nine celestial bodies (Navagrahas) to bring balance, remove obstacles, and invite prosperity into your life. Each planet governs specific aspects of human existence, and this puja ensures their harmonious influence.
Unlike individual planetary remedies that target specific issues, Navagraha Puja provides a holistic reset — it's like servicing all nine engines of your cosmic vehicle simultaneously. This makes it particularly valuable during life transitions, when multiple planetary influences are at play.
The Nine Celestial Bodies
- Surya (Sun) — Soul, authority, government, father, vitality. Day: Sunday. Metal: Gold. Gemstone: Ruby (Manik).
- Chandra (Moon) — Mind, emotions, mother, fluids, intuition. Day: Monday. Metal: Silver. Gemstone: Pearl (Moti).
- Mangal (Mars) — Energy, courage, siblings, property, blood. Day: Tuesday. Metal: Copper. Gemstone: Red Coral (Moonga).
- Budh (Mercury) — Intellect, communication, business, skin. Day: Wednesday. Metal: Bronze. Gemstone: Emerald (Panna).
- Guru (Jupiter) — Wisdom, fortune, children, spirituality, liver. Day: Thursday. Metal: Gold. Gemstone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj).
- Shukra (Venus) — Love, luxury, arts, marriage, reproductive system. Day: Friday. Metal: Silver. Gemstone: Diamond (Heera).
- Shani (Saturn) — Discipline, karma, longevity, justice, bones. Day: Saturday. Metal: Iron. Gemstone: Blue Sapphire (Neelam).
- Rahu (North Node) — Ambition, worldly desires, illusion, foreign lands. Gemstone: Hessonite (Gomed).
- Ketu (South Node) — Spirituality, detachment, past karma, moksha. Gemstone: Cat's Eye (Lehsuniya).
The Navagraha Arrangement
In temples, the Navagraha idols are arranged with Surya (Sun) at the center, surrounded by the other eight planets. Each faces a different direction, symbolizing their independent yet interconnected influence on human life.
When to Perform Navagraha Puja
Navagraha Puja is especially recommended during major life transitions — starting a new business, entering marriage, facing health challenges, or beginning an important project. It's also performed during eclipses, planetary transits, and as part of annual birthday rituals (Varshaphala).
- Before marriage ceremonies to ensure planetary harmony between the couple.
- During Griha Pravesh (entering a new home) for Vastu and planetary blessings.
- When starting a new business or career for success and protection.
- During health crises when multiple planets may be afflicted.
- On birthdays as an annual planetary reset and blessing.
- During Dasha transitions (planetary period changes) for smooth transitions.
The Puja Procedure
A traditional Navagraha Puja involves Sankalpa (intention setting), invocation of each planet with specific mantras, offering of grains, flowers, and cloth in the color associated with each planet, Havan (fire ritual), and distribution of Prasad. The entire ritual typically takes 2-3 hours when performed by an experienced priest.
Items Required (Puja Samagri)
- Nine types of grains: Wheat (Sun), Rice (Moon), Toor Dal (Mars), Moong Dal (Mercury), Chana Dal (Jupiter), White Beans (Venus), Black Sesame (Saturn), Urad Dal (Rahu), Horse Gram (Ketu).
- Nine types of flowers in corresponding colors for each planet.
- Nine pieces of cloth in planetary colors (red, white, red, green, yellow, white, black, smoky, multi-colored).
- Havan Samagri (fire ritual materials), ghee, camphor, and sandalwood.
- Navagraha Yantra or individual planet Yantras.

DIY Navagraha Puja at Home
While a full temple ceremony is ideal, you can perform a simplified Navagraha Puja at home with devotion. Place nine small cups arranged in a specific pattern, fill each with the corresponding grain, light a lamp, and chant the Navagraha Stotra. The key is sincerity of intention, not the grandeur of the ritual.
Whether you perform a simple home puja or a grand temple ceremony, the key lies in devotion and regularity. Even chanting the Navagraha Stotra daily can significantly improve planetary balance in your chart and bring a sense of cosmic harmony to your daily life.
